Red Wine Hot Chocolate

A festive New Year's drink of homemade hot chocolate with red wine, topped with real whipped cream.

  • 1 1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 1/3 cup 2.5-3 oz of at least 70% dark chocolate (I like closer to 3oz)
  • 1 cup of red wine
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream optional
  1. In a small sauce pan, heat milk and chocolate over low-medium heat until chocolate melts. Stir occasionally to mix chocolate and milk. Do not boil.
  2. Once chocolate has melted, add in wine and stir to incorporate.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let the red wine hot chocolate reheat.
  4. While red wine hot chocolate is warming, place heavy whipping cream in an electric mixer with the whip attachment (or use a bowl with a handheld mixer). Beat heavy whipping cream on high until stiff peaks form, about 1-2 minutes).
  5. To serve, divide red wine hot chocolate between two mugs and top with whipped cream.
