Amazingly, delicious mini star pies with figs, grapes, prunes, almonds, and poppy seeds; recipe from The Sweetness of Forgetting by Kristen Harmel.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 cup + 4-6 tbsp water
  • 1 cup dried figs chopped
  • 1 cup dried prunes chopped
  • 1 cup red grapes sliced and divided
  • 6 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • Cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling 1 part cinnamon to 3 parts sugar
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, salt, and sugar. cut in butter using a pasty cutter, two forks, or your fingers (I prefer to use very cold butter, chopped it with a knife, and then mix it into the flour by hand). Incorporate butter until mixture is the consistency of thick crumbs. Add egg, vinegar, and 4 tbsp cold water. Mix with a fork and form into a ball. (I ended up adding 2 more tbsp water as the dough was dry and not coming together for me, 6 tbsp was perfect).
  2. Divide dough in half, form into disks, and wrap in plastic wrap, rest in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  4. Mix figs, prunes, 1/2 cup grapes, brown sugar, cinnamon, and 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves and mixture boils. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 20 minutes. Remove lid and stir, simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  5. Meanwhile, evenly spread almonds on a baking sheet and toast for 7-9 minutes, until lightly browned.
  6. Add toasted almonds to fruit mixture, stir in poppy seeds and 1/2 cup grapes.
  7. Butter 3 muffin tins
  8. Remove one round of dough from the refrigerator. Roll dough out onto a floured surface to a bout 1/4 inch thick. Using a 3-inch fluted biscuit cutter, cut the dough into circles. Press the dough circles into the bottoms of the muffin tins.
  9. Fill the dough with approximately 1-2 tbsp of fruit filling.
  10. Roll out the second dough round and cut out 1 inch stars. Place stars on top of fruit filling.
  11. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
  12. Bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.
